After visiting graves, many people asked me whether it is necessary to step over a fire before entering one’s home. I believe it is. First, purchase a “Hundred Remedies” paper offering from a ritual shop, burn it before the doorway, and then step over the fire before entering.
A client once asked me whether people born in the Year of the Tiger, who are clashing with Tai Sui, could go swimming. The answer is yes—but not during the month of Beginning of Summer. This is because the Tiger and Snake form a punitive relationship, which often brings trouble. Swimming during this period may lead to unexpected problems, so it is better to choose an auspicious time.
Remember this: after the Beginning of Summer, Mars draws closer. Avoid placing too many red objects near your bedside, as this may lead to nightmares.
Why is it considered unsuitable to hold weddings during a year that clashes with Tai Sui? Some call it taboo, others superstition. In truth, it is because Jupiter’s energy becomes overly aggressive, causing frequent changes of mind and impulsive decisions. This can test a partner’s patience and easily lead to arguments.
Most people, after a period of stability, feel influenced by external forces and seek change. When stillness reaches its limit, movement follows. Work long enough and one wants to change jobs; stay married long enough and the “seven-year itch” appears. No one can live their entire life in a single, unchanging pattern.
Clashing with Tai Sui represents change—and, from another perspective, opportunity. When there is a clash, movement is inevitable. Movement can bring fortune or misfortune. Those who act decisively board the Tai Sui train and enjoy a year of momentum; those who hesitate remain on the platform and miss the chance.
The ancients said, “Three parts are destined by Heaven, seven parts depend on effort.” Destiny can be understood as the Tai Sui year. Its positive frequency can energize those who clash with it, filling them with fighting spirit. If we prepare ourselves in advance, when opportunity arrives we gain powerful momentum. But without preparation, drifting day by day, when Tai Sui comes we fail to move forward—and are instead overwhelmed.
In 2009, several celebrities were affected by clashes with Tai Sui—such as Show Lo, involved in a scandal; Zhang Ziyi, rumored to have been abruptly dumped by her fiancé; and Gao Yuanyuan, witnessing the marriage of Xia Yu and Yuan Quan. One example is Tian Liang. In 2009, while clashing with Tai Sui, he played the lead role in the television series Lei Feng. Seventy of Lei Feng’s former comrades—averaging over seventy years of age—jointly published a statement in newspapers, declaring that Tian Liang was unsuitable for the role.
In ancient times, during years of clashing with Tai Sui, people would hang red decorations near their beds, wear red underwear, and fasten red belts. Children were dressed in red vests and red undergarments. It was believed that red could attract good fortune and ward off misfortune.
The market also sells “auspicious ribbons” and “lucky knots” made of silk. Those clashing with Tai Sui tie them around their waists or wrists, believing they can dissolve misfortune and turn adversity into luck. Traditionally, red is associated with protection and good fortune. Firecrackers during the New Year are red for this reason. This belief dates back to primitive societies—red is the color of the sun and fire, both once regarded as divine, and believed to ward off harm.
