Macau is a small place, surrounded by the sea on three sides, and every spring the humidity becomes severe. A student once asked whether building orientation should also take dampness into consideration. An interesting question indeed. Feng shui already involves many factors; if humidity were added as a strict requirement, it would be difficult to find a home without flaws. Besides, overcoming difficulties is also a way to experience the human spirit of survival.

When buying a home, it is important to examine whether the “Green Dragon” and “White Tiger” sides (traditional feng shui terms referring to the left and right surroundings) are strong and balanced. This is a crucial consideration. Years ago, the husband of one of my students purchased an old apartment on Nanjing East Road in Shanghai as a marital home. Within a year of moving in, his wife left him for a wealthier man, citing his poverty. Devastated, he considered renouncing worldly life and becoming a monk.

When tall buildings stand on both sides while one’s own building is significantly lower, feng shui refers to this as a “nest house.” This kind of nest is very different from Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Stadium. The stadium is shaped like a golden egg, free from compression, with smooth airflow and strong geomagnetic movement—conditions that benefit commerce or sports venues.

When selecting a building, the Green Dragon and White Tiger sides must be examined. Beyond balance in strength, distance, height, and prominence, the external appearance also matters. In feng shui, if your building is new while the surrounding structures are old and deteriorated, money may come and go quickly. Conversely, if your building is old while neighboring buildings are new, it may foster feelings of inferiority or even self-abandonment.

Unexpectedly, half a year later came good news—he was remarrying. His new wife, from Macau, happened to be a student of mine studying palmistry. She invited me back to Shanghai to assess the property. When I arrived at Nanjing East Road and looked up, I felt a chill run down my spine. The house was a two-story building, tightly pressed between two tall, dilapidated structures, as if seized by two giants.
