A friend told me she didn’t want the hassle, so she paid someone online to visit the graves on her behalf. It suddenly occurred to me that, very soon, the next generation may no longer set up ancestral altars at home. A few clicks online, no queues, dozens of ancestors honored at once—how convenient. But if remembrance is reduced to a virtual gesture, the spirit of honoring our roots and remembering the past quietly disappears. Visiting graves is not a burden; it is a way for descendants to remember, to learn from, and to feel gratitude toward those who came before them.
A farmer sowed seeds in the field, and an insect came and ate one of them. A young monk asked his master whether the insect should be killed. The master replied, “Even if you kill the insect, the seed is already lost.” If you were that seed, would you blame the insect for eating you—or the master for being cold and unmoved?
The Buddha asked, “Do you truly wish to see that young woman again?”
“Yes,” came the reply. “I long to see her once more.”
“And if doing so requires you to give up your life? In a few hundred years, you could become a famous ancient tree, highly valuable.”
“I am willing,” the answer came.
The Buddha nodded.
Days later, people arrived with axes and trucks. The great tree knew it would soon reunite with the one it loved. Before long, it was sent to a furniture factory, transformed by skilled hands into a long wooden table, and finally placed in a shop for sale
The Buddha said, “With each portion of affliction you let go of, your wisdom grows.” The Buddha does not speak falsely—so have faith in yourself. If Shakyamuni Buddha could cultivate himself from an ordinary being into an enlightened one, then so can we. The power of faith is beyond imagination.
Cause and Effect
Karma never disappears—unless no cause is created. Once a cause is planted, the seed remains in consciousness, never destroyed. When conditions arise, it manifests and brings its result. If one has created negative causes, there is no way to avoid negative consequences. Only through practicing the Buddha’s teachings, cutting off worldly afflictions, and cultivating pure seeds can the suffering of karmic retribution be transcended.
We should not lock ourselves away at home, nor should we fear aging. Elders are treasures. As long as we do not surrender to fate—giving whatever warmth and light we can—we move away from suffering and toward joy. Aging itself is not suffering; suffering comes from not knowing how to find joy within hardship.
The I Ching teaches that all things in the universe exist through the balance of yin and yang. Even a year of conflict with Tai Sui is not necessarily something to fear. If we prepare ourselves, hold a sound view of life, and remain willing to help others, adversity can be transformed into opportunity.
