寒衣节相传起於周代,是道教五腊日之民岁腊。相传閻王今天放魂头来人间收子孫衣服(陽人穿着的衣服)。

Every year on the first day of the tenth lunar month is Hanyi Festival, symbolizing the arrival of the cold season. In metaphysics, there are three major “ghost festivals”: the Qingming Festival, the Zhongyuan Festival in the seventh lunar month, and the Hanyi Festival.

The Hanyi Festival is said to have originated in the Zhou dynasty and is part of the Daoist “Five La” sacrificial days—specifically, the folk winter sacrificial rite. According to tradition, on this day the King of Hell releases souls to the human world to collect clothing from their descendants (meaning clothing worn by the living).

It is recommended to burn clothing offerings for one’s ancestors before noon.
