The Root Chakra (Mooladhara)

The first time I truly sat down to study the chakras was at age 24. That year, Jupiter returned to my natal house for the second time. In my annual chart, I also carried the Huagai Star—a star of solitude. Solitude itself does not frighten me; what is frightening is walking alone in thought, trapped within one’s own mind.

To overcome this inner fear and ignorance, I followed my karmic pull to India. It was my second time visiting my senior brother. Back then, he was only doing small chores in a temple. By chance, we enrolled together in a yoga course—the very one that introduced me to the chakras.

If you think I write this article to sell chakra courses, then you are mistaking the practice as a commercial tool for profit. In my view, practicing chakras is purely a way to observe our inner shortcomings and to raise personal wisdom.

My first yoga class was not meditation, but a lecture on yoga theory. It wasn’t until the third session that I began sitting in practice. The first chakra we worked with was the Mooladhara Chakra, often translated as the Root Chakra, or in Chinese, Haidi Lun ( “海底轮”). It is not directly linked to a specific organ, but rather an energy center located at the base of the spine, corresponding to the pelvic plexus, influencing both our excretory system and reproductive functions.

As a practitioner, I must admit my understanding of sexuality is not as deep as that of a married woman. Because of my simplicity and misperceptions, I was once criticized.

Yet, I benefited directly from the wisdom of the Root Chakra. It is quite simple: the Root Chakra connects us to the earth. I believe human wisdom comes from the heavens, but our fundamental grounding comes from the earth. I may not have the ability to receive heavenly secrets, but I have confidence that through diligent practice, I can draw positive energy from the ground beneath me. My body—my hips and legs—can connect closely with Mother Earth, with the spirit of the soil. They transmit to me the natural rhythms of existence and the hard truth of shared life between people.

I embrace great love. Small, narrow love brings suffering. I have come to understand that harming women creates karmic burdens of guilt, grief, and tears. Such wisdom was not bestowed from above, but was learned through the earth itself—through every blade of grass, every leaf, every flower, and every root, by sensing and experiencing them.
