#The Six-Realms Vajra Plate#

Every culture carries its own ancient myths and legends. When we sift through these stories, we often uncover timeless wisdom.
The word wisdom itself is fascinating. Religions and scholars each have their own interpretations. But today, rather than debating its meaning, let us look with balance and openness at what the Vajra can teach us about living wisely.
After the Autumn Equinox, the nights grow longer. Each evening at dusk, I often see young people practicing smoke offering under the trees. The simplest way to understand smoke offering is this: one lights incense sticks, and through their fragrance and accompanying mantras, the smoke is transformed into food to nourish beings of the “three lower realms.”

What are the three lower realms?
According to The Book of Three Lives, after death we pass through the cycle of six realms of rebirth. The three lower realms are hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. These are places of the greatest suffering. Out of compassion, we make offerings at night by burning incense—hoping that these merits ease their hunger, reduce their pain, and help them reincarnate sooner.
In Tibetan Buddhism, there are four main practices: pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and subjugating. To support these aims, I have inscribed the Mantra of Liberation for the Six Realms Vajra onto an ivory-colored ceramic plate. Its purpose is to remove calamities, increase wisdom, receive blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and dispel troubles caused by petty people.
My hope is that by practicing smoke offerings regularly, people may cultivate the wisdom of Manjushri—the ability to deeply understand people, events, society, the universe, the present moment, the past, and ultimately how to live in harmony with loved ones all the way into old age.
Nowadays, you can find many incense-offering plates on the market. Some are beautifully handcrafted and sold for just a few hundred dollars, perfectly suitable as commercial goods. Yet I personally prefer to create offerings with my own hands. As a registered metaphysics practitioner, I avoid materials of unknown origin—this is part of my professional code of conduct.
I clean each plate with pomelo leaves and sacred powder, then breathe positive energy into it. For this reason, the plate is only for holding incense. It should not be washed with water (a cloth wipe is fine). However, if rain falls on it at night, that is acceptable—because The Book of Three Lives tells us that night rain is the tears of spirits.
The Vajra itself comes from ancient Indian mythology as the weapon of Indra, symbolizing indestructible strength. In our daily lives, fear arises at night because the body is weak; mistrust of loved ones arises because of suspicion; troubles with “petty people” often come because we carry too many karmic debts.
This special plate can hold three to six incense sticks or other offerings. There is no need to wash it—simply empty the ashes into a flower pot, at the base of a tree, or by the roadside.
