Note: Smoke-offering incense, medicinal incense, and water-offering incense are best placed in three separate dishes.

1. Preparation and Invocation

  • Sit in Vajra posture (kneeling).
  • Light the Kṣitigarbha tower incense.
  • Hold the incense holder in your left hand.
  • With the middle or ring finger of your right hand, draw three check marks “√√√” in the air, then write the Chinese character “敕” (chì, “command”) in the air.
  • Invite the Supreme Elder Lord (Taishang Laojun) to descend at the designated place.

2. Invite the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

Chant respectfully:

  • Namo Many Jewels Tathāgata (南无多宝如来)
  • Namo Wondrous Form Tathāgata (南无妙色身如来)
  • Namo Vast Expansive Form Tathāgata (南无广博身如来)
  • Namo Far-from-Fear Tathāgata (南无离怖畏如来)
  • Namo Nectar King Tathāgata (南无甘露王如来)
  • (Optional) Namo Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Who Cares for Deceased Children (南无地藏水子菩萨)

3. Main Offering

  • Place down the incense holder.
  • Sit cross-legged.
  • Light the smoke-offering incense, medicinal incense, etc.
  • Recite the Smoke Offering Mantra:
    唵,阿扎迪,殊鲁,普巴耶,梭哈
    (Ōng, a za di, su lū, pu ba ye, suō ha)

4. Water Offering Preparation

  • Hold a paper cup in the left hand.
  • Add water and rice (gestures as taught).
  • (Optional) Recite the Short Smoke Offering Mantra:
    唵,阿弥利得,吽怕都。
    (Ōng, a mí lì dé, hòng pà dū)
  • Over the cup, draw five seed syllables (seven times):
    嗡 (Om), 阿 (Ah), 吽 (Hum), 凡 (Vam), 捨 (Svāhā/She).
  • Recite the Throat Mantra (3 or 7 times):
    唵。步步底里,伽多哩,旦哆哦多耶。
    (Ōng. bù bù dǐ lǐ, jiā duō lǐ, dàn duō ó duō yé)

5. Sprinkling the Water

  • Stand up and sprinkle the water using the “orchid fingers” mudra (index and middle finger extended, others folded).
  • Raise the hand above the head and flick the water far outward.
  • Walk around the area while sprinkling, reciting the Nectar Mantra until all the water is used.

6. Transforming the Offering

  • Sit down again.
  • Recite the Food Transformation Mantra (变食咒), Illness-Dispelling Mantra, etc., while visualizing the offerings multiplying and transforming.

7. Om Ah Hum Contemplation

  • Recite Om Ah Hum.
  • Visualize the offerings turning into limitless nourishment filling the sky.

8. Dedication of Merit (回向)

Example dedication:

“May the merit from this practice be dedicated to all parents of past lives, teachers, relatives, karmic creditors, and all beings harmed by me through intentional or unintentional killing. May they all be freed from suffering and obstacles, gain great benefit and happiness, and be reborn in the Pure Land.

With this merit, may the Buddha lands be adorned, may the Fourfold Kindness be repaid, and may those in the three realms of suffering be relieved. May all who see and hear this practice give rise to the Bodhi mind. May we, with this very body, be reborn together in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.”

Appendix: Writing the Seed Syllables

The five seed syllables are written symbolically in the air or above the offerings:

  • 嗡 (Om)
  • 阿 (Ah)
  • 吽 (Hum)
  • 凡 (Vam)
  • 捨 (She / Svāhā)

*This is not the most complete ritual. The details of a smoke offering vary depending on the practitioner, the recipients, and the place. This is simply an advanced version of the introductory smoke-offering ritual.

烟供简要仪轨进阶版

注意:烟供香、药供香、水子香最好分三个碟装。

1.金刚跪坐,点地藏塔香,左手拿香座,右手中指或者无名指在空中写三次“√√√”(三个勾),再写“”字,请太上老君到某某地址

2.金刚跪坐,恭请南无多宝如来,南无妙色身如来,南无广博身如来,南无离佈畏如来,南无甘露王如来(南无地藏水子菩萨)

3.放下塔香香座。盘腿坐下,点烟供香、药供香等,念烟供咒:唵,阿扎迪,殊鲁,普巴耶,梭哈(ōng, a za di ,su lū, pu ba ye, suō ha)

4.纸杯在左手上,倒水,加米(手势看视频),小烟供咒(可念可不念):唵,阿弥利得,吽怕都。在杯子正上方写五个种子字(写7遍):嗡,阿,吽,凡,捨。(种子字写法附后)

再念咽喉真言(3遍或7遍):唵。步步底里,伽多哩,旦哆哦多耶。

5.站起来,施水:用兰花指弹水(弹时手最好高于头顶,弹水远一些)。边弹水边念甘露真言。四周走动弹水水杯在手上直到撒完才能放下。

5.坐下,变食咒、消百病咒等,观想。

6.念嗡啊吽,观想。

7.回向(自选:将此功德,回向给生生世世父母、师长以及无始以来的六亲眷属、冤亲债主,过去故杀、错杀、误杀的一切生灵及十方法界一切众生,除碍离苦,得大利乐,同生极乐,同圆种智。愿以此功德,庄严佛净土,上报四重恩,下济三途苦,若有见闻者,悉发菩提心,尽此一报身,同生极乐国。)
