Warning: Do Not Drive a Red Car to the Hospital for Midnight Smoke Offerings

Two Types of Smoke Offering

In metaphysics, there are two main forms of smoke offering, depending on the time:

  • Before midnight (11 p.m.) – this is called a “Material Offering” (Cái Bùshī). The ritual is relatively simple.
  • After midnight until 7 a.m. – this is called a “Dharma Offering” (Fǎ Bùshī). This form is more complex and requires additional ritual elements.

Both carry the power of compassion and merit. The difference lies in their methods.

The Importance of Correct Practice

Recently, in a group of devoted practitioners, someone shared a photo of their late-night offering. As a guide and teacher, I feel the responsibility to give a few reminders.

A Dharma Offering after midnight follows practices of pacifying, enriching, magnetizing, and subduing. Practitioners are often advised to perform it at riversides, hospitals, accident sites, cemeteries, or cremation grounds.

The purpose is twofold:

  1. To provide offerings to wandering souls.
  2. To recite mantras of reconciliation—helping those spirits let go, study the Dharma, and break free from samsara.

In different places, the forms vary. In Beijing, young people gather at night to make offerings. In the south, elderly women burn incense sticks—it is also a form of smoke offering. After Frost Descent, when winter begins, the nights grow colder. Devout Buddhists still light incense: on balconies, in courtyards, or even along the roadside.

There is no fixed location. What matters is the sincerity of your heart. If your intention is pure, it is already true, good, and beautiful.

The Cultural Meaning of Red

In Chinese culture, red is considered auspicious—this is beyond question. But in metaphysical traditions, there is a belief that those who died in anger or injustice sometimes wore red at death, and thus turned into restless spirits.

Whether or not this is literally true, we need not debate here.

From the Five Elements perspective, midnight is the time of the Rat (Zi Hour), associated with Water. Water’s colors are blue and black. Red belongs to Fire. Water and Fire do not naturally harmonize. Even if not directly clashing, their constant conflict suggests inauspicious energy.

After midnight, yin energy rises. With incense mixed with special ritual powders, it is easy to attract wandering souls. Amid this cold and ghostly “gathering,” if your bright red car appears, what does it symbolize? An invitation? An offering? If not, why confuse the spirits?

In Southeast Asia, shamans often use red items as offerings, because red signifies sacrifice. But a car is not an offering. Driving a red car to such a place at such a time may send the wrong signal to the spirit world.

Guidelines for Midnight Smoke Offering

A kind heart is precious, but we must also understand the hidden principles of metaphysics. When performing smoke offerings at night, keep these simple rules in mind:

  1. Do not reveal your full name.
  2. Do not make wishes or requests.
  3. Do not engage in physical contact between men and women at the site.
  4. Do not eat the food used for the offering.

Closing Words

When we perform smoke offerings, we do so with compassion. We are providing food and light to wandering souls, brothers and sisters of all six realms.

That is enough. Love fills the six paths of existence. Thank you.
